It’s not uncommon for a woman to be dissatisfied with her breasts. Size, shape, and position can dramatically change as the years pass, and genetics can leave some women desiring a change. Breast surgery transforms the breasts according to the patient’s wishes. Surgery can make the breasts larger, smaller, or lift them higher on the chest. It can also be used to reconstruct a breast that has been lost to mastectomy. Selecting a great surgeon is critical to attaining the breast surgery results you desire; Sacramento surgeon Shahriar Mabourakh is renowned for his skillful technique and exceptional results. Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure at our practice. Your consultation with Dr. Mabourakh board certified Sacramento plastic surgeon is the first step (go through a virtual consultation with Dr. Mabourakh). A straightforward and safe procedure, breast augmentation is performed to increase the size and volume of the breasts. During breast augmentation, incisions are made in the areola, crease of the breast, or armpit. Saline or silicone implants are then placed in a pocket that is created either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle. The size and shape of the implant is chosen based on the patient’s body type, the surgeon’s recommendations, and the desired outcome.
Breast lift provides a solution to breasts that have lost their shape and begun to sag. Sometimes performed in combination with breast augmentation surgery, breast lift raises the breasts higher on the chest by removing excess skin and repositioning the remaining tissue as well as the nipples. The surgery will incorporate one of several different techniques, such as the donut mastopexy, a keyhole, or full inverted “T” incision.
Breast reduction provides significant relief to women with overly large or heavy breasts that can strain the neck and shoulders. The surgery removes excess fat, tissue, and skin, while sculpting the remaining tissue to make the breasts lighter and firmer. The nipple and areola are moved into a new position as well. This is most commonly done through an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward, and follows the curve of the crease beneath the breast.
Breast reconstruction is performed primarily to restore the form and appearance of the breasts of women who have undergone mastectomy. It may also be used to correct asymmetry or another deformity of the breasts. Reconstruction methods include the TRAM flap procedure, which uses tissue from the patient’s abdomen, buttocks, or back to reconstruct the breast, or the use of tissue expanders and implants. The nipples can be reconstructed during the surgery as well.
Patients may be surprised to learn that some insurance policies cover certain breast surgeries. Breast augmentation and lift are usually not covered because they are deemed “elective” cosmetic surgeries. However, for patients who experience pain and discomfort because of large, pendulous breasts, insurance may pay for a portion or all of their breast reduction surgery. Also, insurance will likely cover the cost of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It is essential to contact your individual insurance provider and determine whether your policy extends to breast surgery.
