What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement is a an embarrassing problem that can occur at any age. Most often gynecomastia starts at puberty, but the problem usually resolves in time. There are times when breast enlargement in men does not resolve and becomes a problem. The breasts may be slightly enlarged with the nipple protruding, or it can be a severe problem with “B” or even “c” cup breasts in boys and men. Gynecomastia may have an effect on the patient’s psyche and behavior. Wearing shirts may be a problem or even participation in sports may become a problem.
What are causes of gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia that occurs at puberty is caused by changes in hormone levels that occurs naturally around age 12 to 13 in boys. It is also caused by obesity, but the problem may not resolve with weight loss and surgical treatment may be necessary. Other causes of male breast enlargement include use of steroids or marijuana. Breast cancer is rare in men but should be considered when evaluating a patient with gynecomastia. There are also rare tumors that may require workup by the primary physician.
Are there any treatments for gynecomastia?
Yes, gynecomastia is easily treated with an out-patient procedure. Ultrasonic liposuction is used to remove the excess fat and soft breast tissue. If there are breast lumps still present after liposuction, a small incision under the nipple is used to remove the remaining firm breast tissue that is not removed by liposuction. This is all done in one surgery that lasts around one hour. After surgery we provide you with a special garment to keep swelling to a minimum.
Is gynecomastia surgery painful?
No, there is minimal pain involved, a special tumescent solution is used that completely numbs the area. Procedure is performed under sedation or general anesthesia in our private, fully accredited surgery suite in Sacramento area. Anesthesia is provided by a board certified anesthesiologist familiar with out-patient cosmetic surgery.
What is recovery like after gynecomastia surgery?
Activities are limited for the first week after surgery. Patients may drive and return to limited duties within three days of surgery. Full sports can start in 3 to 4 weeks.
What are complications of gynecomastia surgery?
Complications are rare with treatment for male breast enlargement, and nfections are rare, I like to place patients on antibiotics for one week after surgery. Bleeding is also not a problem. Numbness of the chest is normal and will improve over a period of two to three weeks. There will be swelling after surgery, but by wearing a special garment for up to four weeks, swelling is minimal.
